Fancy a Challenge?
09/05/2008 by admin.
If you are an intermediate or expert user and you fancy a challenge then how about giving LFS a try. LFS is a self build project for the more adventurous among you. Where by you build your own Linux distro from source files.

10/03/2008 by admin.
At last! Linux users who want to download and listen to music are no longer forced to be criminals. Enter Amazon MP3 Downloader. Amazon has even provided some packages for Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy), Debian 4.0 (etch), Fedora 8 & Open SUSE 10.3. Go to the site where you will find some helpful installation instructions.
Amazon is offering DRM (Digital Rights Management) free music for purchase to Linux user. Good on you Amazon .

Sick and Tired.
24/11/2007 by admin.
I get sick and tired of the moaners going on and on about how Linux does not work properly with this and that hardware. Yes, this is partly true. The reason is that the manufactures of most of the hardware are proprietary and don’t want to release their driver specifications to the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software Community).
Well, stop moaning and do something about it. Only buy products that also support the Foss. If you can, donate a piece of hardware to the community so the the developers can reverse engineer the drivers. If you can program, get involved in the community and help develop the drivers for hardware that are not currently supported. If you find a piece of hardware that doesn’t work go to linuxdriverproject and add it to drivers needed. As Linux gains a bigger foot hold this will become less as less of an issue. These manufactures will begin to understand that it is in their best interest if they want to stay in business to produce drivers for hardware that support Linux.

Linux is not Windows!
23/11/2007 by admin.
This may seem like an obvious truth, but there are some people who don’t realise this fact. They are under the misconception that there is only one OS (operating system): Microsoft. Yes, that is true. I have met a couple of people like this.
Sadly both were in the IT industry so to speak. Well, on the periphery anyway. Although the message is getting out there, there is still more to do. I introduced one of these people to DSL (Damn Small Linux). As the name suggests, it is a small Distro of 50 Mb in size that boots from a memory stick or CD that can be loaded onto your hard drive. The person in question was astounded that firstly, there was another OS, and secondly one could run it from a CD drive and have full functionality as if it was loaded onto the hard drive. Then reboot, and there would be no trace of it because it ran from the CD, and if you have enough, load into RAM and run it from there.

Judge rules against SCO
12/08/2007 by admin.
In Utah on Friday 10.0.07 a federal district judge ruled that Novell was the rightful owner of the copyrights covering Unix.
Unix is an operating system. This has been a long running dispute between SCO Group, who some say was backed by Microsoft, and Novell, who now own SUSE Linux. This was before Microsoft signed a deal, by some known as the Micreovell deal. So perhaps the SCO Group will go away now and concentrate on it’s core business. In my opinion the share holders should be asking questions about the CEO and President . While this was going on at each turn the SCO Group shares tumbled, and all for what?
